Job Summary
Career Services’ mission is to empower and support Redbirds to achieve their professional goals by providing resources, experiences, and industry connections. The primary function of the Diversity Initiatives Graduate Assistant is to offer programs and events that connect targeted student and alumni populations to career development and career readiness opportunities. The Diversity Initiatives Graduate Assistant assists with career fairs and achieving the goals of the Cultural Career Network (CCN), which serves to prepare students for the workplace in areas of networking and career awareness. CCN encourages students of diverse backgrounds to participate in a variety of events designed to connect them with employers, alumni, and resources available to acquire internship and career opportunities.
The Graduate Assistant will assist their direct supervisor, the Events Coordinator, and the Employer Engagement Team to plan and execute programs and events on behalf of Career Services.
Responsibilities include the following:
- Work with the Employer Engagement Team to develop, organize, and implement career programs for students of diverse backgrounds.
- Develop and facilitate programs to assist students of diverse backgrounds with career development and career readiness.
- Provide regular management of social media presence for the department’s CCN Facebook page to include writing/editing of content, photography, and video support.
- Present on behalf of the department during campus and community outreach activities.
- Develop relationships with student groups that serve underrepresented student populations.
- Participate in appropriate office teams and committees and assume leadership when requested.
- Participate in evening/weekend career event activities, including and in addition to all career fairs, Career Services programs, and University events.
- Advise students on resume and cover letter development during one-on-one and drop-in appointments.
- Develop outreach efforts and activities that engage underrepresented populations with alumni and employers.
- Collect and compile data and write reports as needed.
- Work with all functional areas of Career Services to promote programs and services while also performing other duties assigned.
Salary Rate / Pay Rate
$1,510 for 0.5 FTE appointment

Required Qualifications:
1. Eligible for appointment as per the requirements in the Graduate Assistant Handbook which can be found at http://hr.illinoisstate.edu/downloads/GA_Handbook.pdf
2. Must be a degree seeking graduate student at Illinois State University in the Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies program
3. Strong interpersonal, leadership and communication skills, both verbal and written
4. Willingness to work in a team environment
5. Experience giving presentations to varying size audiences
6. Detail-oriented, critical thinking and problem-solving skills a must
7. Ability to work effectively on several projects simultaneously
8. Ability to work cooperatively in a team
9. Technical skills including Microsoft Office Suite
10. Ability to work evenings and weekends

Illinois State University student employees are restricted to no more than 28 hours per week of on-campus employment for all positions held. International students are restricted by their visa status to no more than 20 hours per week of on-campus employment when the university is in session but may work up to 28 hours per week when the university is not in session.
